I have conducted all sorts of trials with this. There is nothing wrong with the earphones. The three ring plug works fine in an ipod and my laptop. The two ring plug works fine in the iphone, ipod and laptop. There is a fuzzy, scratchy sound when using the three ring plug. It worked fine when I first bought the earphones.

Look inside the jack with a good light and see if there is any foreign matter such as lint. If so clean it out with a trimmed swab or toothpick. The lint or crud may be preventing the plug to insert all the way.

I tried that too and it did not work. I just took it to the Apple Store and looks like I need a new phone because they do not replace the earphone jacks when they go bad.

My headphone jack does not work anymore with a three ring plug. It will work with a two ring plug.
