How can I backup my music and playlists in ITunes to an external hard drive.?

If you keep your library consolidated in the normal fashion, just back up the entire iTunes folder. It contains all your media as well as the library files that contain the playlists.

Unfortunately your dealing with a nontech grandpa. How do I back up the entire iTunes folder ? First where do I find the entire iTunes folder and then how do I back it up to my external drive ?
Thank you again for taking the time in answering my question. I lost 6 years iTunes's contents on my Gateway desktop crash event and fortunately I had backed it up to an external drive but when I recovered it with the "add a folder link" in ITunes it all when into my music folder with no playlists. Since I have 100 + audio books it was a mess to recreate the playlists from the music folder.
