Slow imac - Etrecheck data included here

Hello-

My mum has asked me for help with he 2006 imac which has started running very slowly.

It was so slow I had to boot from Snow Leopard startup desks to use Disk Utility. Disk Repair seemed to do something, and completed and computer perhaps marginally faster now. But Permissions Repair barely starts and permissions verify says 1hr 45 remaining' then stops.

I uninstalled mackeeper.

Etrecheck data is below. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions/advice on what I can do next, or whether the machine is just too old. (Or the hard drive is about to fail?)

Thanks very much for any help/advice you can give!

Simon

Several things, Simon:

(1) You may or may not have uninstalled Mackeeper correctly. See regarding malware at end beginning with ****

(2) You will have people telling you to remove CleanMyMac. (In my opinion, it is only problematic if you clean what it suggests. But most likely the person who installed it in the first place acted on the suggestions so it is a potential source of problems.)

(3) The iMac has a truckload of login items.

Make a note of which they are and remove them from the startup.

Test your login items

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  2. Click your account name below Current User, then click Login Items.
  3. Make a list of the login items—you’ll need to remember them later.
  4. Select all of the login items, then click Remove .
  5. Choose Apple menu > Restart.
  6. If this solves the problem, open Users & Groups preferences again, add the login items one at a time, and restart your Mac after adding each one.

When (if) the problem occurs again, follow the steps above to remove only the last login item you added.

(4) you have only 2 GB of RAM - but that by itself should be fine if you have no conflicts.

****

Regarding malware

There are at least two schools of thought expressed by experienced users here in this Apple community regarding malware and popups.

One school primarily uses free application(s); the second school requires no additional software and just some simple steps on your part.

Read these (of many threads) discussions.

In addition to (Edited)Sparkleberry's excellent resume, I think you should remove the following ...

Clean my mac AND all traces of Macpaw in case they have left something else behind.

You should also remove Trusteer, which although in fairly common use has been the subject of much critique in these columns.

To do both the above, use Find any File after following any of the developer's uninstall info.

I think you should also read this.

Feb 27, 2015 8:52 AM in response to Simon Stephenson

Dear Sparkleberry and Seventy one

Thank you very much for your help which is sincerely appreciated!

I am now trying to get thoroughly rid of the programs as you guys suggest. The computer is definitely running faster, but maybe not entirely back to 'normal' just yet. (but not done find any file yet)

Sparkleberry, in Snow Leopard the Systems Prefs menus seem a little different - like it is 'accounts' rather than 'users and groups' and I was suprised that there seemed only to be a few things in here. I've deleted all of them, but do you think there is another location where this stuff is hiding?

The adwaremedic looks great, but alas needs 10.7 (and this imac can't apparently go beyond 10.6.8. But I'm downloading Find any File as we speak.

Thanks so much again,

Simon

Ah, thanks Allan.

The uninstaller says something funny - like 'The uninstaller does not support this type of Mac' but I found the files using Find Any File and have been deleting them.

Also in computer/library/launchagents some of what seem to be the other malware stuff and have been deleting those (but only the ones obviously not necessary.)

Will check out adding Ram.

Feb 27, 2015 9:14 AM in response to Simon Stephenson

Sparkleberry - yes, thank you - it looked just like that!

But there were only about 3 things in it and they looked fairly benign (eg Adobe reader)

The files popping up in etrecheck seem to be located in computer/library/launch etc - is this possible?

(There are only two accounts on the computer, and my mum's is the main one and the other was empty in the kind of screenshot you posted.)
