Upgrading from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard using retail install disk. Do I need to have my original serial numbers to install? I've lost them.

I have a 2008 iMac currently with 10.5.8 OS. I finally have given in and need to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I ordered the retail disc and just received it, but I thought there would be a new install serial number with the disc. However, there is nothing. I lost my original install serial numbers ages ago, so I'm wondering can i even install this new OS?

iMac 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 4GB ram

There should be no requirement for a serial number. I have never been required to input a software serial number when upgrading an Apple OS.
