iPhoto was failing when the program initiated - error "iPhoto quit unexpectedly". I updated to the latest version of iPhoto and OS X (10.10.2). After searching support communities, I downloaded the Library Upgrader 1.1. When I run the upgrade, I get the original error message "iPhoto quit unexpectedly."

I depressed and held Option and Command while launching iPhoto. I receive the message "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apps".
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. Can you? Import some photos and test to see if the library performs as expected. Does it?
As far as I know, I can't select which library is used when the program launches. The iPhoto program does not give me any options such as "create new library". The program never fully boots - immediately pops an error box containing "To open your library..." error message. I can select "learn more" or "quit". All other options in the top drop down menus are greyed out.
Try holding down the Option key before you double click on the iPhoto application and continue holding it down until you get this window:
You're letting up on the key too soon.
