My iBooks icon has disappeared. How do I get it back?

If you can find it via the spotlight search screen then does the search results screen give any indication as to where the app is e.g. if the app is in an app folder then the folder name should be shown to the app's right on the search results screen.

I have a iPad 3 and my iBooks has disappered, I have turned on the restrictions and that did not help. I have a version 9.2.1. Where do I find spotlight search! Any suggestions?

Pull down from the middle of home screen.

What iOS version is on your iPad (Settings > General > Restrictions) - on older versions you could delete the iBooks app, now it's built-in and can't be deleted (nor hidden from the iPad's home screens)

I was able to pull up the search screen, and I can download the free app. Is there a way to recover what I had in the library?

If they are ibooks from the iBookstore then they might, if they are still in the store and you haven't moved countries since buying them, be able to redownload them via the Purchased tab in the app (and check to see if any are hidden from the cloud : Hide and unhide purchases in iTunes or iBooks on your Mac or PC - Apple Support)
