what is error code -3403D?

I recently just purchased another refurbished 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) Model with 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB. It came pre-loaded with Snow Leopard 10.6. I upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and then I started having the computer randomly restart on me several times. I have gotten Kernal Panic messages once I could get the machine to reboot. I have read countless forums since and have heard that the logic boards were recalled some time ago. I have also heard that Yosemite could be the problem. I have no idea which is the exact culprit. I have wiped the hard drive 2 or 3 times now using the Recovery feature (Command R) and have wiped the hard drive. I have rebooted it and reinstalled OS X Yosemite. I also have a copy of Snow Leopard 10.6 that I have had for a few years now. I attempted to install it instead of Yosemite but it will not do anything. It simply does not work. So I contacted Mac Of All Trades (where I purchased the computer) and they suggested I reset the PRAM and SMC. I did both those things but the restarting still occurs. They also suggested I do a AHT (Apple Hardware Test). When I tried to do it pressing Option D, it started an internet recovery process and asked me what WiFi network I wanted to choose. I chose my network and entered my password. Shortly after it gave me "apple.com/support -3403D." Does anyone know what that means? It also will not run the AHT or Apple Diagnostics. I cannot figure out why or why I cannot fully wipe out my hard drive and install Snow Leopard 10.6. I cannot figure out why it keeps restarting and giving me Kernal Panic messages. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I also did not back it up on my Time Machine before upgrading to Yosemite (I know dumb!!!) but I used Migration Assistant to transfer my programs from my older MacBook Pro to this one using a Time Machine backup. Thank you again.

Hi all, I was having the same/similar kernel panic issues on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro (system details below). I think I got the problem solved, and since it was a bit different than replies so far wanted to share. Here are the main steps I took, and why. But first, I found this (slightly outdated) post from CNET helpful: https://www.cnet.com/news/tutorial-avoiding-and-eliminating-kernel-panics/. This is what I mostly based troubleshooting on, plus searching forums like this one.

My troubleshooting steps

  1. Reset the NVRAM: did not fix the issue
  2. Test if it's the GPU: I tried the very helpful suggestion by OGELTHORPE in this thread and downloaded gfxCardStatus to force my system to use the Intel "Integrated Only" chip. RESULT: still crashed
  3. Bad (or loose) RAM? Quite a while ago, I replaced the original 2 x 2GB memory with 2 x 4GB Crucial brand ones. To troubleshoot, I opened up my Mac and removed one of the two (top one, random/easy choice).
    1. RESULT: This fixed the issue. No crashes for nearly two days…
    2. NEXT: Replaced the memory card I had removed to see if, hopefully, it was just loose or something, and not actually corrupted…
    3. RESULT: No crashes for about a day!

Conclusion: I think that loose RAM was my problem. Fingers crossed that this resolves it for good…

I have the same exact issue.

MBP 6,2 (early 2010).

Installed Yosemite and began experiences random kernel panics sometimes successively before booting again.

It stopped booting, so I wiped the HDD, clean installed Yosemite and used Migration Assistant to transfer my user account. The same day after having done this I had another kernel panic. Here is my Kernel Panic Crash Report

I tried to open Apple Hardware Test as jbroom1982 did, and received the same error code: -3403D

Please advise. Thanks! 🙂

You have the misfortune of having purchased a model identifier 6.2 MBP that has a history of GPU problems. There was a recall on these models but that has expired.

You may have the logic board replaced at your expense.

Or you may download this software:

https://gfx.io/

It will allow you to disable the discrete GPU which should stop the kernel panics. You will be able to run the MBP on just the integrated GPU but at the expense of graphics performance.

Ciao.

I have te same problem, i updated my Macbook Pro 15" mid 2010 to Yosemite, and then it started to restarted a few times in half hour..

i found this post - and i conclude that Yosemite is no good for this Macbook? Maybe Apple is doing it for a reason - so we must buy new Macbook? If not - why they dont fix this?

Please help us find a way to use ours Macbook from 2010, on Yosemite normally as all Macbook users do..

Thank you

Mar 17, 2015 10:04 AM in response to OGELTHORPE

Can you confirm that problems are mostly on Yosemite?

Are you telling me that if i want to use my Macbook on Yosemite MUST install that software and shut down my desrete graphic card (use only integrated).?

Or you suggest my that i install older version of OS X, maybe Maverick?

Please advice, i am not sure what to do now?

Maybe is best to sell this old Macbook before it goes dead?

Thank you

I never wrote anywhere that the issue was mostly due to Yosemite OSX. This is fundamentally a hardware problem.

Are you telling me that if i want to use my Macbook on Yosemite MUST install that software and shut down my desrete graphic

That software allows you to disable the GPU which is the cause of the kernel panics. It is your choice to install it or not.

Or you suggest my that i install older version of OS X, maybe Maverick?

I have no reason to believe that installing Mavericks will have an effect on the kernel panics. You may do so, but I doubt that there will be any change.

That is not a decision for me to make.

I purchased a similar laptop (mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15) from the same place and am having the same problem under Yosemite. The problem has not yet shown up under OSX 10.6 or 10.9 for me, but I've only had this 1 day, so you might be able to get away with downgrading. When I contacted Mac of All Trades, they had no suggestions other than contacting Apple about the problem. They insinuated it was a software problem and that it would not be covered under warranty from Mac of All Trades.

Mar 24, 2015 1:01 PM in response to OGELTHORPE

i have questions about this program "gfxCardStatus" that you recomended.. It is ok, i choose integrated only, and everything is ok, until i shut down Macbook, and power it on again.. When Macbook starts, "gfxCardStatus" doesn not remember my choise "integrated only", i have to choose it again..

is there any way to fix it?

or is there any other program like this?

Mar 28, 2015 3:55 AM in response to OGELTHORPE

Hey OGELTHORPE,

thanks for the heads up, very helpful indeed.

To get my machine up and running again, I:

  1. Erased the disk (DIsk Utility wouldn't let me, I had to write random data to it to trick Disk Utility into thinking it was blank first)
  2. Intalled Yosemite with a USB drive
  3. Restored only necessary files via Time Machine backup
  4. Installed gfxCardStatus 2.3 to use the integrated graphics only (despite the fact that v2.3 will not prevent a switch to NVIDIA's GPU at times)

Now the issue has persisted and it seems that again I am back to square one. Booting into recovery mode and verifying the disk from disk utility returns:

"File system check exit code is 8."

and

"Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."

Upon clicking "Repair Disk" and waiting 5 minutes yields a prompt that says:

Disk Utility stopped repairing "Untitled. Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible , reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

My question is whether the hard drive corruption has something to do with the MBP 6,2 graphics GPU factory flaw. My uninformed hunch is that it does, given that this is the second time it happened in two weeks. I would bring my MBP to an Apple store, but the nearest one I know of is almost 600km away.

Let me know if you have any ideas. If you need anymore information, I can also try my best to get it to you as well.

Thanks again!

Install a new HDD in the MBP and see if that makes any difference. I think that you have two different problems.
