Macbook Air DVD freezes

My colleague uses her 2012 Macbook Air to show movie clips from DVDs in class. She plugs in a variety of projectors through the (Apple) Thunderbolt-VGA cable, and plays the movie from her (Apple) external Superdrive.

This has always worked perfectly.

However, since upgrading to Yosemite, if she leaves the movie in "full screen" mode, as soon as the Controls disappear, the picture on the projector freezes - although it continues to play on the MBA's screen.

Is this to do with the MBA's integrated graphics memory - which can't be upgraded, of course. Anyone suggest any workarounds?
