Your system will slow down, may crash and refuse to boot if you run out of space. Remove files you no longer want or need. Start by emptying your trash, and check your Downloads folder - files tend to amass there. If you have a little bit of room, install Omnidisksweeper which will tell you where your largest files and folders are.

Make sure you absolutely have a backup - preferably Time Machine - to an external drive. This is vital.


Ultimately you may need to store some files (eg movies or other large files) on an external drive (NOT your backup drive) and connect it when you need to access those files. The Retina MBPs have SSDs rather than hard drives, which are more expensive, but OWC (macsales.com) has upgrades for most models if you absolutely need to have all your files on the computer.
