iPhone 5S (iOS 8.1.3)....available space question

I have a iphone 5s (16GB)...When I check the storage usage on the phone (settings>general>usage) it shows 1.5GB available...When I connect phone to iTunes on my iMac (Yit shows 5.7 GB as available free space, even after synced... Any thoughts as to why the difference? Unfortunately the iPhone info correct.
