This often is a result of how you have e-mail set to store on the server or not. Please go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to find your operating system, and post a new thread in the appropriate forum for your Mac OS X version. Apple has moved around the settings in each operating system, so you'll get more accurate help if you post in the forum that matches your operating system.
