How many firewalls...?

I use a BT Router wirelessly with my Mac Mini....

The Router has a supposed "built-in" firewall which, at present, is showing as being active...

My Mac also shows a firewall activated via System Preferences / Security...

  • Do I need both...?
  • If both are on, will it cause issues...?

Thanks.

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Generally the OS X firewall is off by default. The assumption would be that most folks are behind a router. Since you have a MacMini, I would recommend turning it off.

If you had a laptop and used it outside of your home wifi network, I would recommend turning it on. And, if you left it on, you wouldn't have to remember to turn it on when you were traveling.
