Persistent spinning wheel on 27" iMac running Yosemite.

I've tried everything. Posting my Etrecheck report below. I notice an alert on my HD, but I'm no expert. I appreciate any help.

Problem description:

I get a spinning pinwheel frequently. I have reinstalled Yosemite, run Repair Permissions, Repair Disk, reset the PRAM, and the problem persists. It happens when I scroll a web page, when I click a link, when I close an application, and at other random times, making it nearly impossible to get any work accomplished.

That Mac's hard disk drive has failed and must be replaced. You can do that yourself or pay Apple to do it for you: Genius Bar Reservations.

After repairing your Mac, do not reinstall the adware that's affecting it. If you use the Time Machine backup to restore the failed hard disk's contents, remove the adware subsequent to performing the Time Machine restoration.

For a description of how the adware came to be installed on your Mac, how to prevent that from occurring again, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.

Don't use garbage products such as "Memory Clean" either. All they will do is force more frequent use of mass storage, accelerating its eventual demise while degrading your Mac's performance.

You have a number of issues. First backup your boot drove and the Gromit volume as they appear to be failing.

After that Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk and disk permissions. Reboot normally, run Disk Utility on the Gromit volume and rerun Etrecheck. Post the results here.

Next you have the Genieo adware installed. Go to TheSafeMac.com and download the free AdwareMedic app. Or you an do it manually by following the instructions in the Adware Removal Guide at The Safe Mac site.

Run the OS X Yosemite: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test to see if it can confirm the disk errors on the hard drives.

If you still get disk errors or are concerned about the health of the iMac make a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple Store and take the iMac in for a free diagnosis. You'll need to find a 3rd party repair facility for the external HD. However, if you can repair it with Disk Utility and have ongoing backups of it you may opt to continue using it.

Again, make backups of the two drives first.
