My iPhone keeps asking me for the pasword of an iCloud I no longer use.
The "put in your password" keeps popping up on the screen and I apparently do not know the password because it is not accepting it.

Then reset the password at iforgot.apple.com.
You aren't clear about what you are doing when this happens. This might be an answer: If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support
But if you see it when updating an app that means that the app was purchased or downloaded using a different Apple account (not just a different Apple ID).
