iCloud notes not showing up on mac

I Just set up my new Mac mini. I have icloud turned on for my notes on both my iPad and iPhone. The notes show up and share on both devices, but only a few old notes (from 4-5 months ago) show up on the Mac when I look in iCloud. Obviously there's some connection, but where are all the rest of the notes?
