How disable OS X auto-select text?

Hi!

Using Mac OS 10.6.8 on one machine and 10.7 something on another.

I'm sooo frustrated by the way the system decides what I want to select in a text. Sometimes, it marks a single word, sometimes and whole sentence. Other times (like when I'm e.g. trying to copy an URL), it selects pretty randomly.

I do not want the system to select on my behalf. I want to be 100% in charge of what I want to select.
