When I open iTunes I cannot see the standard summary page in the left side
You mean the Sidebar on the left side.

Thanks for info. Actually what I was trying to do was transfer a rented movie from my iPad to my iTunes library so I could stream it to Apple TV with using Airplay. Apparently this cannot be done, unless you have some more sage advice
You can stream it directly from your iPad to your AppleTV.
I know, but is it true that once you rent a movie on a mobile device, you cannot play it through items on your mac?

Correct. You cannot transfer it to the computer if rented on a mobile device.
