iTunes Playlist

On itunes, how can I delete a song from a playlist but retain it on the master list?

Right-click > Delete, or select the song and press the Delete key. These operations on items on a playlist will only remove the item(s) from your library if you hold down the SHIFT key at the same time. I've always thought it very confusing that the operation is labeled as "Delete" when it has such different results in a playlist and in the library (where these operations - without SHIFT - will completely remove the song from the library).

Check that you're looking at the song within the actual playlist and not from the perspective of a playlist folder that contains the playlist. The latter will list all the songs as you'd expect but the right-click > Delete function is missing as you're not editing the playlist itself - as in these examples:

  1. Here a playlist folder is selected, showing the content of all the playlists in that folder - Delete option is not available in the right-click menu.
  2. This is the playlist itself within the folder
  3. Now Delete is available in the right-click menu
