If I and the other folks posting here aren't convincing, search for "AdwareMedic" on these forums and see what others are saying about it. You could also look up the app on MacUpdate and see what reviews there have said.
However, if you cannot satisfy yourself that it is legit, you don't have to use it. I also maintain a set of manual removal instructions that will help you get rid of all the adware that AdwareMedic detects. You can find those instructions here:

Yes. After many frustrating attempts to remove the malicious Genio from my Mac, I downloaded Adware Medic. I was very apprehensive about Adware Medic but desperate to remove Genio. This software worked.

I swear by AdwareMedic, and Thomas R too. Not many developers who monitor their programs as regularly as Thomas does.
