IPhone turned off iCloud backup without my knowledge. how can this happen?q

A Year ago I increased my iCloud storage to cater for my iphone backup, but today I found that all the iCloud options were turned off. I had not turned them off, so can this happen automatically?

If you plugged it into your computer and told set it to back up to iTunes instead of iCloud, that would have done it. It can't turn itself off without intervention.
