My Macbook Pro is running very slowly

Problem description:

My Macbook Pro (2009) slowed significantly when I installed Yosemite.

I made some changes to settings of various apps and this helped but the system seems to be running increasingly slowly.

I have installed the latest version of Yosemite; I am now on 10.10.2. And the system has slowed a little more.

I have trashed a couple of Apps to make more room. Also a movie. System seems to be running a little faster now (or should I say less slow).

I suspect syncing between iPad and laptop may be slowing the laptop.

The Apple chappies at the shop said my battery needs servicing or replacing (probably the latter).

In particular the following apps are slow:

* Chrome (altho slowness may sometimes be caused by slow Internet connection I guess.

* iPhoto

* MS Word is almost unusable because it is so slow. Possibly the version I have is incompatible with Mavericks?

I se that the EtreCheck report talks about Tuxera being out of date. I can’t find where it is on my system in order to uninstall it.

All help and advice gratefully received.

A couple of suggestions:

Download EasyFind and use it to locate specific files. Often it will be successful when Spotlight fails:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/easyfind/id411673888?mt=12

Delete Google Chrome and its various parts. It is a resource hog and has a history of compatibility issues with OSX.

Install additional RAM. Your MBP will support up to 8 GB> The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Ciao.

Thanks so much for helpful info.

I have downloaded the EasyFind software.

I will investigate more RAM, new battery, and SSD. (I live in Melbourne so I am not sure about using OWX and Crucial in USA.)

Also I am not really wanting to install this stuff myself, so I will need to take my Mac beast to someone to do the installations. Apple shop or elsewhere ... perhaps you would advise in general. Also the question then becomes: would I do better to replace my beast with the latest Apple Macbook Pro?

Mar 2, 2015 9:51 PM in response to CKG10

After further investigation, I have decided to install 4 more Gb RAM myself, making 8Gb in total. OWC's excellent video on how to install the RAM makes it look So Easy ... what could possibly go wrong? OWC recommend Ram City here in Aus and they sell Crucial RAM so I have ordered from them.

Thanks again for help.
