ipod update stuck

I just tried to update the ios on my brand new ipod through itunes. The ipod shut down, restarted, and is now frozen on the black apple start-up screen and won't finish the update. I can't even power it down. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I’m sorry to hear that the update process with your iPod hasn’t been a great experience so far. If the iPod still seems to be stuck on the progress bar screen, you may want to reset your device as recommended by this resource:

If the update or restore never completes or your device is unresponsive, reset your device.
