itunes 12.1 can't find apple tv 1st gen-- help!

My itunes 12.1 (on macbook pro running yosemite) suddenly stopped reading the apple tv. I tried restart the apple tv & itunes, no luck. Tried disconnecting the macbook from the apple tv to reconnect, but now itunes cannot find the apple tv at all to read the connect code to set up again to stream. The documentation speaks of an icon (there isn't one, just the airplay icon, & it does not find apple tv either-- but I never used that before in any case). Preferences & devices show nothing, Multiple restarts don't help. The apple tv can connect to the itunes store & play stored stuff (it is a first gen); apple support doesn't have a clue (I got switched multiple times, & was told they had no idea what I was even talking about. Frustrated-- can anyone help me figure out how to get this working again? It was perfectly fine, then suddenly it was gone & I can't get it back.

My Gen 1 Apple TV just went away yesterday, after I had purchased new music at the iTunes store. The next step is always to force a sync, and keep it all on the ATV, from which I play our entire music library.

For the first time, iTunes (12.1) no longer shows the ATV as a device, and I cannot find out how to force it to see it. Through a multitude of attempts yesterday it showed up for a moment one time, but when I tried to sync, it just hung. Once I restarted iTunes, the ATV was again missing.

Wondering if the OP, or anyone else, had any ideas on this one?

No changes in network, iTunes or anything else I can think of. This will be a huge problem for us, so thanks for any ideas.

We continue to have this problem, off and on. The solution this time (after several days of puzzling) was to again unplug the ATV1, then the router, and allow everything to reboot. I'd tried this several times. We then reset the ATV1 to the network. It finally became visible again to iTunes.

All of this, of course, while I could STILL get the internet from the ATV, as I could see the movies and music categories at the Apple Store from the device. So while it never looked like we'd lost the network, forgetting it, and reattaching seemed to solve the problem. This time.

Good luck. I will really miss this device when it no longer works.
