Q: can't get on cellular network

I am not able to connect to my cellular network. I'm not able to make/receive phone calls or text messages. I have no bars in the upper left corner of my iPhone - it continuously says "searching". I'm able to connect to WiFi.

This is what I have done:

I've reset the network settings (multiple times) via setting/general/reset/reset network settings.

I've rebooted the phone (multiple times) via sleep/wake and home buttons.

If I go into Phone/voicemail, I get this message "Voicemail is Unavailable, no SIM card installed". I've removed and put back in the SIM card.

I've turned on/off the Airplane Mode, which didn't help.

This is what I have:

iPhone 6

Verizon

iOS 8.1.3

Also, one other issue that I have on both phones is I have Auto-Lock set to 2 minutes and it never auto-locked on either phone, but stayed active.

I just purchased the iPhone 6 today, upgrading from a iPhone 5 (with Verizon & iOS 8.1.3), which had the exact same issue, assuming it was a default with that phone. Since both iPhones have the same issues, it doesn't appear that it is the SIM card or the phone itself. What else could it be?? The iOS?? If it's the OS, how can it be resolved. I would like to have a iPhone that works like a phone!

Have you contacted the carrier? I would start there....

I did - which is why I upgraded to the iPhone 6. They thought it was a bug in my iPhone 5. But since the same issues are happening on both phones, it doesn't appear that the carrier (Verizon) is causing the issue. When I purchased today, it worked at first, but it was also on iOS 8.2 (I believe). When I came home, I synced it with iTunes and upgraded the OS. Since I've upgraded the iOS (on both phones), is when these issues started taking place.

Actually, the fact that two entirely different model phones have the same issue seems to point to the carrier or the SIM card rather than the phone. The phones are different, the carrier (and the SIM?) are the same. Have they offered to provide you with a new SIM to see if that fixes the issue?

When I brought in my iPhone 5, we assumed that the SIM card was the issue. They replaced it on the 5, but didn't help. The SIM card in the iPhone 6 is a different one than the new on in the iPhone 5. So, 3 different SIM cards, but no change in the problem.

Well, then the only thing that has not changed is the carrier. Keep at it with Verizon. Again, it simply would not make sense that an issue like this would "travel" from one phone model to a completely different phone model. You have now eliminated the SIMs, so the only common denominator is the carrier....

    Best of luck,

2 common denominators: iOS 8.1.3 and the carrier.

One other option would be for you go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Content and Settings, and then set the phone up as new (not from a backup) to see if the issue goes away. If it does, then the issue could be that you have corrupt data on your backup. (A third common denominator - same data on both devices).

If you want to try this, I would recommend that you do an iCloud or iTunes backup first (so you have a current one) and then try the set up as new to see if a "clean" device will work as expected.

I can certainly try this. Does this erase EVERYTHING on the phone? If this does work, how do I go about getting my data back on the phone? And, how would I pinpoint what data was corrupt, if that is the case?

Yes, it puts the device back to Factory Settings, so it is like a brand new phone that has never been set up. There really is no way to determine what part of the backup is corrupt, however.

As far as recovering your data if you determine that indeed the backup is corrupt, you can retrieve it via various sources:

Do you sync with iTunes? If so, then you could re-sync from there to get much of the data back on your device. You would sync it as a new device and select your sync options prior to syncing.

iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

iTunes 12 for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

Also, if you are using iCloud, then once you sign your iCloud account on to the device, anything you are syncing with iCloud will download (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes). You can check your iCloud content by going to iCloud.com on a computer.

The last month's-worth of Photos (up to 1000 photos) will also download with the iCloud sign on. Any other photos that are not in the photo stream should be imported to your computer before doing the Reset so you can sync them back afterward:

    PHOTO IMPORT IOS TO MAC/PC

Purchases can be redownloaded directly to the device (if allowed in your country - see list below) by clicking on the iTunes app and clicking on More and then Purchased, or the App Store app and clicking on Updates and then Purchased.

    Downloading Past Purchases by Country

    Download past purchases

A Wifi connection is recommended for anything that you are downloading directly onto the device.

Post back with any questions or concerns.

    Cheers,

I set the phone back to the factory settings and it appears to work! Although the iPhone 6 wasn't on iOS 8.3.1 when I purchased it yesterday, after the factory reset it stayed at that and didn't go back. Since it works, it does seem to eliminate the OS as a possible variable to causing the issues.

But when I sync it to the backup it goes back to the same issues, which leads to damages/corrupt data as the problem.

Should I do the factory reset again? But this time, is there a way that I can individually add stuff to be synced to narrow down the possible corrupt data?

You will not be able to use the backup at all. There is no way to selectively back up. The post just above your last one has all of the ways you can retrieve your data without using a backup. And I didn't ask before since we hadn't yet established that your backup was corrupt, but are you running any apps or music that you did not purchase from the iTunes store? (i.e., downloaded from a website on your device).

I'm not sure if I'm getting this right!

What is the difference from using the backup and syncing?

I have all my music on my hard drive, so I can add that back in later. I do not have any iTunes purchased music. This likely isn't the issue because I didn't have any music on my iPhone 5 as it was only a 16G. All my photos are automatically copied to my DropBox, so I don't need to add them back now. It's all the other settings, etc. that I would like back. I don't believe that I have any other purchases on my phone. I also don't believe (but can't be certain) I have any apps that I downloaded from a website vs. the iTunes store. How would I know this if I did?

I backed up to iCloud and to my computer (through iTunes) prior to the reset. Once I reset I did reset as a new phone. But when I synced my data from the back up that's when it went wrong again.

I'm on a Mac using iTunes 12.1. The link that you have above for this goes to a blank page. Is it basically this information that is on this link? iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad and/or this one: iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync and organize iOS apps

When you use a backup to set up a device (new or reset), it is restoring that device to the backup. A backup contains a lot of information that is not included in the iTunes Library itself:

Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? - Apple Support

The first link you listed is the same as the one I listed for the iTunes sync processing.

If you are only wanting to get your settings back, then pretty much the only way to make that happen is to go back into Settings, and set those up manually. Aside from photos and music, what other data are you looking to get back on your device specifically?

Thanks GB! That seems to work!

I was able to get all of the apps loaded back on my new iPhone, much of the saved data (history, etc) wasn't there. For the most part, it wasn't a big deal, other than spending pretty much the whole day going through all of this. So in the end it does seem like I had corrupted data somewhe

Let's hope it continues to work!

Thanks for your help and guidance!
