QuickTime controls don't work

I was watching a podcast recently (not live, but recorded one) in iTunes and the forward/backward buttons (highlighted in orange in the screenshot) didn't work. Why?

iTunes 10.6.3

Mac OS X (10.7.5), MacBook Pro 15.4 mid-2012
