My iMac 8.1 has only 1 GB RAM. I would like to upgrade my OS from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Lion.
My original reason for this was to connect a new all-in-printer.
Any recommendations what I need to do (instructions) and which RAM I need to order specifically to upgrade. 4GB seems to be the standard these
days. In this case I guess I will have to replace also the existing 1 GB - right ?

Go for the 6 GB as Mike suggested. I get all of my memory from Crucial.com. They have these modules for your iMac model:
And they guarantee compatibility.
Either Crucial or OWC would be a good choice.
The reason I didn't mention Crucial is that they don't offer a 6Gb kit. The OP would need to find the correct modules, 1x4GB and 1x2GB on his own as their memory advisor tool won't offer him a 6gb option, or a 1x4Gb option. Just figured since OWC offered it as a kit he might be more comfortable with it.
