Why is my iCloud not backing up?

i Brought this iPhone 6 plus and iCloud restored most of what I had. about 80 percent. However it did not automatically back up and when I updated the phone I tried to back up on iCloud twice but it keeps saying last back up failed. And that's it's never been backed up.
