Time Machine OK in Safe Boot?
Yes, it works OK; I did get a good Time Machine backup on an external USB 1 TB Seagate drive. Had to reformat the drive to make it work. This is on a late 2009 iMac 27 with a broken Radeon graphics card. This iMac can only be used in Safe Boot mode where the graphics card is not used. Login in in standard mode is impossible because the bad graphics card blacks out the login screen. Booting up in Repair mode works also. I used it to re-install OSX 10.9.5 to see if it would fix the graphics problem. I did that before I realized the the Radeon HD 4850 was bad and is the cause of my problem.
Currently looking for a way to get this repaired. Any hints are welcomed.
