Apple External Superdrive

When importing music into I-Tunes using an external superdrive attached to a 27 inch 2014 I-Mac the discs often eject before the full import is completed. Some CD's import at 12x speed others at 4x or slightly more. Is this a hardware or software problem or a faulty drive?
