Airplay audio stutters from Yosemite, video remains unusable.

I've come across numerous other threads describing this issue but none seems to have a resolution other than "wait until Apple fixes it via update", so I decided to make a post and see if I could find some newer answers since it's been a while.

Upon updating my macbook pro to Yosemite back in when it was released, Airplay audio from my MacBook to my Apple TV 3rd Gen stutters for about 30 seconds after beginning Airplay and intermittently thereafter. With Mavericks, everything worked perfectly and nothing has changed hardware-wise since then, which handily implies that Yosemite is to blame. Still, I have wiped and restored both my macbook and the Apple TV (via usb), and even my router (Airport Extreme ac) in my efforts to troubleshoot with no luck. Wifi conditions are maybe 8 feet with direct line of sight and I've tried both 2.4 and 5 GHz spectra. Video airplay functions after a fashion but has a continuous stutter that makes it practically unusable. Note that this issue also affects my partner's MBP but both of our iPhone 6's continue to function perfectly. The Apple TV is connected to the Airport via ethernet cable.

Other solutions I have come across include disabling bluetooth on the mac, but this solution is untenable as it breaks the functionality of Continuity features which I have come to depend on and also doesn't seem to work for everyone, and several terminal commands which alter the behavior of bluetooth on my system which ultimately have the same adverse side effects as simply disabling it.

I am seriously lamenting this broken airplay functionality and, since it was a key motivator in my use of the Apple TV product, am strongly considering something different. Am I pretty much just out of luck here?

Edited to note that the Apple TV was connected via ethernet.

Completely random fix that worked for me - was driving me nuts and like you tried every other suggestion.

I was certain issue was post iMac Beta upgrade to 10.10.3 - reverted back to 10.10.2 and still there - did all the Blue Tooth, router suggestions blah blah blah

Changed to wired network, still there.

I then factory reset Apple TV - while not connected to the network - problem was not present - just playing around in Apple TV basics no issues - happily confirmed not the Apple TV.

Removed wired network, re-added wifi network, de-authorised my computer and then re-authorised and everything has since worked - just watched an hour long show and no issue.

Doing a little jig of joy - off work today sick so wanted the bloody Apple TV working 🙂 Fingers crossed it works for you.

I couldn't get this to work. I reset my Apple TV to factory settings and I'm having the same issues. It seems Airplay being active somehow dramatically reduces wifi throughput from my laptop. Obviously, it makes sense that there would be some impact but Airplay seems to be glitching and dramatically reducing wifi bandwidth. I tried running a bunch of internet speed tests and found something interesting: the speeds I was getting with video Airplay enabled were seriously low - around 1.5 Mbps, while it's about 60 Mbps without Airplay enabled.

Thanks for the response! This actually improved performance somewhat but did not resolve the issue completely. In this case, it made a 1080p video look like something from 1999 but it was at least watchable. Internet bandwidth with Airplay enabled also improved dramatically, but not to what it should be.

I really appreciate your help anyway!
