Macbook Pro is lagging. Only 3-4 years old.

Hi, everyone. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. I am not super tech savvy, but I did run an EtreCheck. I have provided the results below. My Macbook Pro Notebook has been lagging all week. It is especially bad when I am in Microsoft Word. However, even as I type this now, I have to wait a few seconds for the screen to catch up with my typing. It will also get hot on occassion. :-( I currently live 3 hours from the nearest Apple store. Please help - my computer has always been super fast... (OSX Yosemite 10.10.2)

Problem description:

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hi,

So I'll leave it to others more knowledgeable to interperate your EntreCheck report.

What I will say is that I've upgraded many 4 MBPs 2009-2012 and a MB Unibody 2009.

So on the MBPs, I upgraded the RAM to 8 GB and added an SSD u" sually 120 GB (Price driven..)

I was only able to move the Unibody MacBook to 4 GB and a 250 GB SSD.

All the parts came from OWC, never a compatibility problem and instantly OKs a return. (Never had to do that.)

On my Early 2011 MBP 13 upgraded to 8 GB RAM and a 120 GB SSD. Photoshop CS 6 opens in 3.4 seconds and Word 2011 in 2 seconds flat.

After burn testing all these machines I realized that I hadn't seen the spinning beach ball at all except in the 4 GB MacBook.4

I went back to last night and I have added some lines from the Console for that time period. If you don't find these helpful, or there are too many just let me know and I will delete them. Thank you.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Mar 1, 2015 1:28 PM in response to AppleGirlLovesApples

Cost of repair would vary depending on who does it and that varies depending on the part of the country.

If you bought from OWC and did it yourself or have someone help you who's fairly adept:
Parts would cost:

$131.99 for the 240 GB SSD.

The RAM upgrade is $89.99

Instructions are here:

http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_unibody_mid12/

You can buy tools there also. I actually buy mine at Harbor Freight.

Mar 1, 2015 1:31 PM in response to spudnuty

Thank you for the response, spudnuty. What if I were to send it off to Apple? Do you have any idea how much that would cost? I suppose they wouldn't be able to fix it at the store the same day? I live about 3 hours away from the nearest Apple store and I am not super computer saavy when it comes to this kind of stuff. I also have a limited budget. Thank you.

Mar 1, 2015 3:49 PM in response to AppleGirlLovesApples

I can't be sure because I don't know for certain what the faulty component is. It's probably the hard drive, which is fairly easy to replace, but it might not be. I strongly recommend that you have the machine tested before spending any money on replacement parts. If you don't live near an Apple Store, go to another Apple-authorized service provider (not a Best Buy or a PC shop.)

Mar 1, 2015 5:20 PM in response to AppleGirlLovesApples

"What if I were to send it off to Apple? Do you have any idea how much that would cost?"

No because we aren't sure what your problem is.

"I suppose they wouldn't be able to fix it at the store the same day?"

That for sure wouldn't happen.

" I also have a limited budget."

Too bad you don't have someone close who can do a diagnostic. I would simply swap the drive out for one of the many test drives I have around here. If that fixed the problem then we'd know it was the drive that was the problem.

Macbook Pro is lagging. Only 3-4 years old.
