How do I reformat a mac mini mid 2010. It has Yosemite 10.10.2. There is no startup disk. Starting holding the command R button does not put me into the correct mode. We want to sell or give away this product.

Click here, phone Apple, and order replacement original disks. A retail DVD won't work on that Mac.

Your model came with a set of software restore discs. You need to use those to erase the drive and then install a fresh copy of the original OS X version that came with the computer. You cannot use the retail copy of Snow Leopard. You will need the original discs. If you don't have them, they can be purchased from Apple:

You cannot sell or give away your Mini with any version of Lion or later installed. Those versions are all permanently tied to your Apple ID and cannot be transferred.
Since that Mac came with Snow Leopard installed originally, it does not have a Recovery Partition. For that reason it does not recognize the Command + R boot sequence. You need to have the original install DVD for that Mac.
Since it had Yosemite it should have a Recovery partition it Yosemite (really anything Lion or above) was installed using Apple's installer)

Since the OP said it didn't work, I spared the details and assumed that was the case. Thanks.
If the Mac still works then either:
- Update the EFI for Internet Recovery as discussed n my previous reply and then boot to internet Recovery and format the HD
- redownload the Yosemite installer from the Mac App Store and make a bootable install media and boot from that and then format the HD
My husband said there were no disks. I went to the storage box where I keep all things Mac & there they were in his original box. Thank you so much for your help.
