After being able to access the store previously, I now get this same error message, and do not know how to correct the problem.

I do have exactly the same issue. iTunes 7 was successfully running and after I updated to 7.0.1.8 I get the same below error message. I tried already everything mentioned in other discussions and nothing helped. Even unistalling and going back to version 6 (which was also running fine in the past) does not help.
I installed 7.0.1.8 on another PC in the same network with the same firewall settings and internet access and there it works fine. This version screws something up in the registry I would think.

I can connect to the store and buy music, but for some reason starting last night i get an error message when downloading music saying "There was a problem downloading "Music that you bought / bla bla / i love you". An unknown error occurred (-42018).
Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again.
I reset my dsl modem, i reset my router, i plugged directly into my modem, i rebooted 7 or 8 times... I was gonna try on another computer to see if that works, and the last idea i had was trying from my mom's house, she has cable, woohoo my dsl is only 144k maybe i should always do that.
Anyways my connection is fine, i downloaded a song from emusic just fine, i browsed the web, i found out Zito blew the game, bla bla. I give up =(

After upgrading to 7.0.1.8, 12 hours later and I'm still getting that same message when I try to access the Store.

run network diagnostics (help -> run diagnostics) and post the results here (black out the IP information and such from the report).

plus as a good rule of troubleshooting thumb, turn off (completely off) any firewall, pop-up blocker, spyware software, or anything else that you've got running that affects internet connectivity in any way shape or form.

This *****...I really sung iTunes and iPod's praises before this crappy release.
And to think I actually told my wife I wanted a MacBookPro for Christmas....NO WAY NOW. They can't even get it right with new "more stable release of iTunes"

I too had been suffering from this same problem, but have managed to find a way around it.

I download the latest iTunes software earlier this evening, and purchased some tunes from the store, no problem at all. I left them downloading, wandered off for half an hour or so, came back to play them and itunes informed me my computer wasn't authorised! When trying to authorise the computer i received the 'unable to access itunes store...etc, etc'.

After several frustrating hours, finally ripped the power cable out the back of my router, dialled up with my rusty old modem and bingo! worked first time. Plugged the router back in, reconnected and was able to access the store again, although only for half an hour!!

I am appaled at the lack of support from Apple on this problem, as I had no issues before updating the software and will not be purchasing music from them ever again!
  • Sub.Hen Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
I went on a different computer on my network and managed to download half of the songs i purchased, but it stopped with the other billion still left to download. I left that computer off all night and day and i'm gonna try it again but my main computer still gets the error on first try.
Maybe they just want the money. Personally i think this "3 at a time" business is eating their bandwidth and the software gets mad at us for being so music hungry.

I'm also getting the same dumb message saying network failure. So i did what you all told me about the firewall but that still didn't work. APPLE IM REALLY GETTING TIRED OF THE MESSAGE FORUM IT"S NOT WORKING PLEASE CALL ME.

I was having the same problem spoken of. iTunes store was telling that my network connection was timing out, or something of the sort. This is what I did.

    1. Go to the following: Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings/Automatically Detect Settings -- make sure that this box is clicked.

    2. I unplugged my wireless router and surfed the Internet without it. Later on, I plugged it back in without problem (that's a spoiler that whatever I did worked).

    3. I've turned off pop-up blocker in my Symantec firewall/antivirus (see link below).

    4. I made sure that my Symantec wasn't blocking iTunes. Under Personal Firewall, click configure. Then click on Programs. If you scroll down the list and you see that iTunes is associated with "Block All" in regards to Internet Access, that's bad. Although my rule was either "Permit" or "Automatic" I removed the rule anyway.

    5. I "flushed my DNS Resolver Cashe" whatever that means (see link below).

The following link, in addition to unplugging my wireless router, seemed to help the most: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304084

I'd like to know if any of this worked for anybody

    Private Build   Windows XP

I started up my backup computer again and let it download while i ran off to get a root canal. I had the problem with it yesturday so i shut it off for the night and most of today, so now i'm back with a numb cheek and most of the songs downloaded. Maybe shutting the computer down for a few hours could make it work, i know rebooting didnt help though.

Nobody seems to have an answer for this one.

How do you contact Apple directly, there doesn't seem to be any details for personalised help on their contact pages.
