how do I back up my contacts. I have tried but they do not show up on icloud

Backing up the contacts they are saved in the backup file, not in iCloud. If you want them to appear in iCloud, then you need to sync them to iCloud. There is a difference between a sync and a backup.
Doing a backup to iCloud stores data from the phone in a way that is only useable for a restore to the phone. You can't view the contents of the backup stored on iCloud. More information on iCloud backup: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977
If you sync the Contacts to iCloud they should be viewable on iCloud. You sync by going to Settings > iCloud and turning Contacts to on in that screen. If they aren't viewable on iCloud after you have done that, the following may help: https://support.apple.com/en-us/TS3998
