when i try to add a file or folder to my itunes account it stops working and closes

I am using windows 8.1 and version 12.1 of itunes. when i try to add a folder or file to my comouter itunes it stops working and say's that itunes is unresponsive and then it closes. I have not had this problem before until about a week ago. Any thoughts?

iPad 2, iOS 8.1.3
