My safari tool bar is showing 7 stuck download buttons. clicking on them does nothing. why is this happening and what can I do?

I've successfully downloaded several video clips, but all of a sudden the links start to show a download happening but the clip never appears in the downloads folder and now I have 7 stuck download buttons on my tool bar. clicking on them does nothing.
