I Can not resize the size of my screen. The dock is in the way. Should be simple to do.

I'm assuming you're using OS X 10.5 or 10.6.
You can hide the Dock, temporarily or permanently, so that it is only displayed when you move the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen.

(Option+Command+D is the keyboard sequence to accomplish the same thing)
Once hidden, move the mouse cursor to the lower right corner of the application window (the cursor arrow will turn to a two-headed arrow) and click to 'grab' it.
Then you can resize the application window. Newer versions of OS X permit 'grabbing' any side or corner to resize a window.
To return the Dock to original setting.
