Unexplained system slowdown after SSD upgrade?

I upgraded a Macbook Air (5,2) with a larger SSD and cloned the old SSD content. Now the drive is in perpetual spinning beachball slowdown mode. What might be wrong? It does not appear to be the hardware.

The cloned drive did have Parallels w/ Windows 8.1 on it but not as a bootcamp partition. I had booted with the clone just fine.

It is configured just as my drive on my MacBook Pro. The space that should be there is there.

  • I formatted the new drive, it runs through the verify disk and permissions repair with flying colors.
  • I verified Keychain Access permissions.
  • I have scanned for viruses, none.
  • The activity monitor shows no abnormal behavior on the drive or the memory.
  • I booted into hardware test mode and it passed without a hitch using the intensive scan or whatever it was called.
  • I've booted into safe-mode and the problem remains.

Here is the console log from several beachball incidents:

Yes. Misbehaved in safe-mode.

Activity Monitor did not show abnormal usage on CPU, memory, I/O -- at least the best I could tell because the spinning beachball meant that everything was lagged badly. I'll check on the networking processes though.

I'll do the EtreCheck too.

Thank you for replying.

Yes. Misbehaved in safe-mode.

Safe Mode disables most 3rd party additions, which are often causes of Mac slow downs and panics. The fact that you experience the problems in Safe Mode implies it is something NOT software related. Iif the beachballs are network related, then the WiFi, the router, the ISP, and since you did replace the disk with an SSD, it could be the SSD. And having opened your case, it could be the motherboard (highly unlikely, but until the cause is known, you cannot totally rule anything out).

But it would still be good to follow up on the other things, as they can maybe provide additional diagnostic information.

I doubt it is the motherboard only because the external SSD clone boots up and behaves fine -- no spinning beachball.

The boot into hardware test turned up nothing, which made me think the SSD itself was fine. But I'm guessing that's not too reliable.

Problem description:

New SSD installed; getting spinning beach ball continually

As dianeoforegon says, you have Geneio, and I can attest from personal experience that it will make any Mac crawl. My Wife got it on her fully tricked out Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM and an Apple SSD (really fast SSD), and her system was begging to be put out of its misery.

Get rid of Geneio as fast as you can. Once that is gone, you should see a huge improvement.

And as you went to the trouble to install an SSD, you should budget for more RAM in your future (cheaper than SSD's).

Mar 7, 2015 11:10 AM in response to BobHarris

Thank you. Unfortunately erasing those files -- in fact all adware detected -- did not work.

I erased the drive, reformatted it, and then downloaded Lion under the Command+R boot mode.

Still major beachball spinning. With 90+% idle CPU and over half the memory unused.

So now I'm 95% confident that it is drive.

Mar 7, 2015 1:30 PM in response to Old Toad

I used ClamXav on the clone and it find one virus which it deleted. Subsequent scans of the new drive after the re-cloning showed no virus.

At OWC's request, I erased the drive and created a new single partition. Then I downloaded Lion via Command+R boot. Even just installing Lion was horrendously slow -- I go the spinning beach-ball when entering my Apple ID, setting the region, and setting the timezone (that took 00:01:45), which is clearly abnormal. So it pretty much has to be the disk.

When I would boot from the clone, everything runs fine, even with the external drive latency.

Unexplained system slowdown after SSD upgrade?
