How can I compress a folder, 13.9 MB, on my MacBook Pro OS 10.9.5. I've tried File > Compress but the folder remains the same size.

Thanks for your advice. I probably should have explained up front that all the files inside are PDFs that I'd already used Acrobat Preflight on to optimize for online publishing. I believe this make them as small as they can be. I was just hoping that I could still compress down the "umbrella" folder. The PDFs are in two folders inside it. I tried compressing those, too, but they didn't reduce in size either.
If they're already compressed and archiving the folder will not make it any smaller in size.

Some types of files are already compressed and compressing them again can actually make the larger such as photos.
That is correct. If they are already compressed, compressing them again will not make them smaller and can actually make them larger instead.
Thanks! I just posted a response to QuickTImeKirk. You'll see that you're on target. The PDFs, in two folders inside the folder, were already optimized down. I guess I was doing some wishful thinking, hoping to reduce the overall size further.
Thanks again. We crossed in cyber space there. I did have to zip the folder so I could attach it to an email but at least it wasn't bigger than the unzipped file, actually 13.6 MB versus 13.8 unzipped.
