Why do I have 2 hard drives?
iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
I don't see where to delete it in disk utility. It just has first aid where you can verify disk or repair disk. Erase, RAID, and Restore. But none of those tabs have a delete button. If I right click the drive, it just says open, unmount, reveal.
Looks like you partitioned your hard drive at some point. Can you post a screenshot of your Disk Utility window with the two showing (Applications > Utilities)?
Also, what model/year is your iMac?
You have a 500GB drive partitioned as two drives, the second of which is 125GB and is empty.
You should be able to reincorporate that space into the main drive, or you could just use it as storage space and leave it as it is.
Which would you prefer?
Do you know how to combine them or make it to where I can use the empty one too?
In Disk Utility.
Delete the second partition (select the drive itself, then go to the partition page and delete the partition Mac HD2)
then drag the bottom righthand corner of partition 1 down to occupy the empty space.
As you are altering partitions I would make a backup if you don't have a current one.
Ok, thanks! How do I make a backup?
You will need an external drive, then use Time Machine to make the backup.
Ah, ok, thanks a bunch! 🙂
You're welcome
