I have a red dot with a 1 on my App Store icon and cannot find out why

I cannot find any reason why a red dot with the number 1 has suddenly appeared on my Dock's App icon. I can't establish if it is a notification, or if attention is required. I haven't found it acknowledged to exist at all.

I've checked the App Store & its help section, checked for updates & every help option I could think of or offered along the way.

My only other solution (if I get no answer here) is to take it into the Apple Store where I bought my mac. Which is ok but the 110 mile drive to get there isn't always possible when commuting through Alaska's winter wonders.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), appears only on App icon in Dock

Do not be concerned. Formally, it is advising you that you have one update (somewhere😀) . It has been known to appear with Hidden apps, apps you have removed (but not entirely), actual updates (have you checked App Store > and on the line below the tool bar "updates" which should also be showing a number 1.

It is not worth making a journey, that's for sure. It will rectify itself eventually (or with your poking around).

It might want you to upgrade from Snow Leopard, there have been 4 new OS releases since 😁

My Snow Leopard system has 2 in its red circle. When I start the App Store, it changes to 1 (for Yosemite), but as soon as I quit, it goes back to 2. I ignore it. NOTE: Snow Leopard is the Mac I use at work and do not surf with it much. Mostly just ssh into other work systems.
