my device has the picture of the usb and ITunes logo but then when I do a update it starts extracting and once it says waiting for iphone my serial number says N/A? why?

yes ive tried - it says extracting software and I can see my serial number and the meicd I think it is but when it says waiting for iphone then it says serial number n/a and error occurred. no it hasn't..😐
