My daughter's phone isn't ringing for calls, just vibrating. I checked the settings and the mute switch and even restarted the phone, nothing seems to work. When I adjusted the ringer volume in settings, the speaker worked just fine. She said it started happening after she had her thumb against the home button and something popped up on the screen. Any suggestions on what to try next?

Did you check if "do not disturb" is activated in Settings/Do not disturb? If yes, switch it off.
The phone receives calls and texts, so I assume that it "do not disturb" is off. I'll have her double-check. Thanks for the thought.
If you adjust the volume for incoming calls, does it say ringtone underneath the volume icon?
Yes, it says ringer. I just got off the phone with her and got a little better info on what popped up on her screen yesterday. She says her thumb was slightly touching and to the right of the home button, the volume icon flashed on and off a couple of times and then the ringer stopped working.
She should try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. She will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
Try resetting all iPhone settings !!!
Sorry for the delay, I had to head off to work yesterday. I'll have her try this and let you know what happens.
She did a reset from the Settings menu and it didn't solve the problem. Thanks for the suggestion.
Deleted this post, since I accidentally replied to myself.
Apparently, she has already tried this to no avail. At this point, I'm thinking it may be a hardware issue. I replaced the sleep-power/volume buttons on my son's iPhone 5 last year because the sleep-power button stopped working. Her phone is a little more than a year old and there is no telling how many times those volume buttons have been used or how many times the phone has "accidentally" been dropped.
The only way to rule out a software issue would be setting it back to factory settings, without using a backup afterwards.

If there are still problems after that, this might be in deed hardware related.
