Will my iMac 8,1 that is older than mid 2007 support OS X Maverick? I also believe there is only 6 MB of L2 cache. What would I need to do to update my Safari?

Yes. It will.
If its an 8,1 iMac then its not older than 2007. It would be a 2008 model. And would in fact support Mavericks and even Yosemite.
If it truly older than 2007, and as such is not an 8,1 model then it will not support Mavericks, but may support Lion instead.
If all you want is a more up to date browser though, Firefox should be able to run its newest version on 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
Will the 6 MB L2 Cache be sufficient for Maverick or better? It says you need 8 MB on system requirements for Maverick.

Not sure where you are getting that from. Neither Mavericks nor Yosemite's Requirements specify any amount of L2 Cache.

Could you please provide a reference where it says a requirement on L2 cache?
Additionally: although it states that 2 GB RAM are sufficient, the reality is that 4 GB should be considered a minimum if you want to do more than web browsing and email. If yours can handle more - more is even better.
Sorry, it was a reference to 8 GB of 'available space' on requirements for Maverick. Did not say L2 Cache. Frankly, I don't know where to view my available space!
If you open About This Mac in the pull down menu under the apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen, it will tell you the amount of RAM currently install on your Mac.
The best info I can get is Bank 0/DIMM0 1 GB and Bank 1/DIMM1 1 GB. Is this what I am looking for. Still am not clear about locating 'available' memory.

Memory and storage space are different things.
You have 2GB of Memory, split in 2 modules of 1GB each.
For your Available Space, you can click on the "System Report" button, and then on Storage. To get an overview of your hard drive and available storage.
Something like this:
The free portion is your available storage.
Now we know you have 2 GB of RAM (and the suggestion to get more).
As for looking up your available hard drive space: in case you don't get the above window on your Snow leopard system (I can't remember what that looked like), you can find out how much hard drive space you have another way:
Double click or Control click on your Macintosh HD icon and you will see this:
Choose Get Info; in the resulting window, tell us what it says next to these:
Capacity
Available

Great - obviously that is plenty. For future reference: you should always maintain an absolute minimum of 10 - 15 GB of space for the operating system to function properly (but more is much better).
