Why is my battery life is terrible?

I use my Macbook pro (non-retina, purchased March 2013) for internet browsing (not very much music or video streaming, though), light Microsoft office editing, and some scripting. As I use my Macbook, I can watch the battery-percentage indicator tick down like the minute hand on a clock. From a full charge, my battery lasts 2-4 hours, and it used to last at least 50% more, while running more applications. What is going on? It would be nice to use my portable laptop as a portable laptop.

(From etrecheck)

Problem description:

My battery doesn’t hold charge like it used to. I bought the computer new exactly two years ago. With light use (internet browsing but not streaming, document editing, some scripting), the battery only lasts 2-4 hours from full.

1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.

2. Follow these instructions, or thesefor OS X 10.8 or earlier.

3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked

Enable Power Nap while on battery power

if it's shown (it may not be.)

4. You can also try resetting the SMC.

5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.

6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
