While in use, my mid 2012 15 inch MacBook Pro will just stop working and a blinking picture of a file with a question mark in it will appear. Upon restart, the computer will work again.

I am running OS X 10.10.1 ... when I tried to update to 10.10.2, it said that I downloaded it but it didn't update. Now, when I try to update, it doesn't list it as an option.

I ran a hardware test and no issues were found.

Please make a clear report of what you did. What, exactly, did you download? What does, "it doesn't list it as an option," mean? What does "it" refer to?

I went to the "About this mac", clicked on the update software section, and it took me to the app store to download the update. I went through the update process, restarted the computer, and now when I go to "about this mac", it still says I am using 10.10.1, but there is no longer an option to update the software. I tried this last night, but I have been having the blinking folder issue for months.

OK. Get the Combo updater that I linked above and forget about using About This Mac. After it downloads double-click on the .dmg file your receive which will mount the updater on your Desktop. A window should open automatically with an installer package displayed. Double click on the package file to perform the update. This will run regardless of whether you have 10.10.1 or 10.10.2 actually installed.

Thank you for that. I have successfully updated the software, but the underlying issue (Mac crashing with blinking folder, but then working for several hours upon restart) is still happening. Do you have any suggestions for that?

Have you run Disk Utility to see if it reports problems with your hard drive? The blinking question mark indicates inability to find a boot drive.

It's possible that your drive is having problems, regardless of the Disk Utility results, or that the cable connecting the HD to the logic board is beginning to have problems.

Have you selected a Startup Disk in System Prefs?
