Messages constantly downloading images

Hello,

I have a Mavericks 10.9.5 workstation with Messages using AIM and Bonjour. The issue I am facing with messaging attachments is when I go to click on the magnifying glass of the message picture the Messages app will download hundreds and thousands of duplicate files with the same name in my Downloads folder until I quit Messages.

Any advice on resetting Messages without disrupting anything related to Mac Mail would be greatly appreciated.
