Replaced a Time Capsule with an Airport Extreme

I replaced an old Time Capsule with a new Airport Extreme. Didn't see the option for keeping the old network and settings so I set up a new one. Now I have two networks. Have to switch back and forth constantly to whichever one has the signal. How can I go back to just one network?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

On your Mac......

Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

Click on the device whose network name you want to change

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window

Edit the setting for Wireless Network Name as desired

Change the Wireless password and Verify if required

Click Update and the device will restart with the new settings

How many networks do you have?

If you name the networks the same for both the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme, then you will have two networks that use the same name.....and act like one network.

In other words, the settings for Wireless Network Name and Password will be same on both your Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme.

Now, if you clicked the Wireless Options button one one of your devices to set up a separate name for the 5 GHz network.....then you will need to make sure that both the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme are set up this way.

Thanks for the clarification.

But, if you have assigned the name of the wireless network that you want the AirPort Extreme to use, then you are done. Nothing else to do.

You might still see some of the "old" networks until you restart each of your Macs, as they will remember networks to which they have connected in the past.....event though they are no longer there. Give them a day or two to forget the old networks when you click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen.

If you have the time, we can give you instructions to go into the settings for each Mac and remove the names of networks that the Mac has connected to in the past. Let us know if you want to do that, but it should not really be necessary in most cases.

So, the question here would be.......if you open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, click Edit, and then click on the Wireless tab at the top of the screen......

Does the network name that you want to use appear next to Wireless Network Name? If yes, you are OK,

If no, then edit the settings box to enter the name that you want to use for the network.

Edit and Verify the Wireless Password if you need to make any changes to the password that you want to use.

Click Update and you are done.

Optional.....if you have the time.....you can remove the names of networks to which the Mac has connected in the past, if you no longer need them.

On your Mac.....

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

Open Network

Click on WiFi on the left to highlight it

Click Advanced at the lower right

Here, you will see a list of networks to which your Mac has connected in the past. If you want to remove a listing, click on the name of a network to highlight it, then click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the network

Do the same for other networks that you no longer need

Then click OK, then on the next window, click Apply

Close the windows and restart the Mac

Then, do the same thing on each other Mac that you have.
