Locked out and not synced

is there anyway to backup or unlock an iPhone 4 with the message 'iPhone is locked connect to iTunes' I have never connected the phone to iTunes or iCloud. It's never been backed up. I'm locked out. I have photos on it of my new born baby and my recently passed father. Please only respond with suggestions on how to solve this. Thanks in advance. Not sure of what operations system is on it
