Mystery SOLVED: root of kernel panics in my PPC Power Mac G5-Quad found after almost a year! SURPRISING CAUSE!

Some of you may remember (I'm certain that the ever helpful, super-knowledgeable and patient BDAqua does) My maddening struggle with mysterious kernel panics last summer.


Here's one of the (long) threads on the subject: PPC G5-Quad panic kernel woes.


I'm posting this and resurrecting the old thread because the trigger and root of all my woes turned out to be a huge surprise, something none of which would have suspected in a million years:


⚠ The culprit was and is DROPBOX ! 😮 😮


NOTE: I've been able to identify and solve this issue ONLY in the combination of Tiger, PPC and Dropbox. My machines running variously Snow Leopard and Lion are not affected, even tough Dropbox is active on them too,


I'll elaborate as soon as I have time, and only if there's any interest in the subject by forum members. The background activity by Dropbox must be doing some unholy damage to the directory—or something like that—to such a degree that the damage extends to an external, bootable FW backup clone of the boot drive, as Dropbox treats it like a separate computer. Yikes!


I unlinked the G5 Quad from the Dropbox website, then I used Find Any File to find and nuke anything with the Dropbox anywhere in the file name or path, and did the same to the bootable backup FW drive. Problem gone forever—I hope!


2.5 GHz Power Mac (PPC) G5-Quad; 16GB RAM; mutant, flashed 550MHz nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 1,700MHz 512 MB of VRAM; ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D LP SCSI card; Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot drives; intrusive Spotblight, Dashboard and Time Machine permanently disabled; dual 22" monitors [shared with the Mac Pro Quad]; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet via wired Ethernet; FW flatbed scanner; 2 SCSI scanners (one tabloid-size transparency scanner and a film scanner); various internal & external HDs; FW Epson 2200 and Ethernet Samsung ML-2850ND printers; 2 X Back-UPS RS 1500 XS units;


connected by Etnernet and sharing keyboard, mouse, stylus and dual side-by-side monitors with:


Intel Xeon Mac_Pro1,1 [late 2006] 2.66 GHz Quad; 16 GB RAM; mutant/flashed, factory-overclocked 875/1225 "Apple PowerColor" ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1 GB of GDDR5VRAM driving side-by-side dual 22"/24" monitors [shared with the G5-Quad] in Extended-Desktop mode; Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8 boot drives; intrusive Spotblight and frivolous Dashboard permanently disabled; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet and networked via wired Ethernet.

Reiterating, so I can mark this as the correct solution:


⚠ The culprit was and is DROPBOX ! 😮 😮


NOTE: I've been able to identify and solve this issue ONLY in the combination of Tiger, PPC and Dropbox. My machines running variously Snow Leopard and Lion are not affected, even tough Dropbox is active on them too,


The background activity by Dropbox must be doing some unholy damage to the directory—or something like that—to such a degree that the damage extends to an external, bootable FW backup clone of the boot drive, as Dropbox treats it like a separate computer. Yikes!

SOLUTION:


I unlinked the G5 Quad from the Dropbox website, then I used Find Any File to find and nuke anything with the Dropbox anywhere in the file name or path, and did the same to the bootable backup FW drive. Problem gone forever—I hope!

Before applying the above steps, I had not been able to work for more than some 75 minutes—often less than 10 minutes—without a kernel panic, and it would take me many, many hours or days of work with ATH, DiskWarrior, unplugging peripherals, etc., to get the machine to boot again.

The machine has been running continuously for over 100 hours now, after numerous shutdowns and cold starts, as well as restarts.

I guess it's a good thing they're dropping support for PPC Macs...

We noticed that you're running the Dropbox desktop application (client) on an older operating system (OS X Tiger 10.4 or OS X Leopard 10.5). We're writing to let you know that as of May 18th, Dropbox will no longer support these older versions of OS X.
